CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: THE UNAVOIDABLE ISSUE IN CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY IN NIGERIA.
This paper examines corporate social responsibility as the basis of making corporate economic motive socially relevant and mutually compatible with the social expectations of host communities. Critical areas discussed include corporate social responsiveness and models, corporate social performance and models, the relevance of social responsibility, benefits of social responsibility, corporate social responsibility framework, obstacles to effective social responsibility practices in Nigeria etc. Among the recommendations are that organizations must practice proactive social responsibility, the establishment of corporate social responsibility framework or charter, benchmarking and compliance with national and international best practices etc, operation of comprehensive host community content plan, etc. The business should be profitable, sensitive to social problems, act ethically and responsibly, obey laws and regulations and engage in philanthropic activities.
