AN ANALYSIS OF TOTAL PRODUCTIVE MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA BREWERY PLC, ENUGU, NIGERIA.
Maintenance has traditionally been viewed as a separate entity outside the manufacturing process. As companies began to identify the role of maintenance in the production process, a gradual shift in thinking occurred. TPM emerged out of the need to integrate maintenance with manufacturing to improve productivity and asset availability. The objective is to ensure that machinery and equipment are always available to manufacture products for the end customer. Also, to minimize rework, slow running equipment and downtime, and maximum value-added at a minimum cost. The paper studied the current practice of Nigerian Brewery Plc. located AMA in Enugu and found the following (i) that Nigerian Brewery is a fully automated plant (ii.) that the Brewery is already practising this world-class manufacturing practice called TPM, though below 85% which is the world-class standard for Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). The researcher concludes that at this crucial point of global competition, the implementation of TPM is not a matter of liking it or following the fashion, but brings the machine back to its original condition just as the saying a well-maintained machine could challenge the newly procured one in the work environment.” Thus the paper recommends that other industries in Nigeria should benchmark this manufacturing strategy as this is the reason for high productivity at Nigerian Brewery Plc, Enugu in Nigeria.
